Nuclear Tech Race: Big Tech's Billion-Dollar Bet on Small Reactors

As AI Power Demands Surge, Three Companies Lead the Race to Build America's Next-Generation Nuclear Plants - But Who Will Win?

Editor's Note:

As tech giants race to secure nuclear power for their AI operations, a remarkable shift is occurring in America's energy landscape. With TerraPower, X-Energy, and Kairos Power leading the charge in advanced nuclear development, and over 25 states passing supportive legislation, the nuclear industry stands at a pivotal moment. The convergence of big tech investment, innovative reactor designs, and unprecedented government support signals a potential transformation in how America powers its future.

While this analysis typically remains exclusive to our premium subscribers, recent developments - including multiple billion-dollar deals and groundbreaking announcements from major players - make this information too critical to restrict. Our research partners have just released a comprehensive analysis that demands immediate attention.

The nuclear industry is witnessing an unprecedented transformation as technology giants pour billions into advanced small reactors, aiming to meet soaring electricity demands from artificial intelligence operations. With the first deployments targeted for the early 2030s, the race is intensifying among well-funded startups and established players to revolutionize nuclear power generation.

TerraPower Takes the Lead

Bill Gates' TerraPower has become the first U.S. company to transition from design to construction, breaking ground in Wyoming in 2024. Their Natrium reactor operates at atmospheric pressure using sodium cooling, potentially halving traditional nuclear plant construction costs. With $830 million in private funding led by Gates and SK Group, plus $2 billion from the Department of Energy, TerraPower aims to begin power generation by 2030.

Amazon Backs X-Energy's Vision

X-Energy secured a landmark investment from Amazon, marking the first direct tech sector backing in the advanced nuclear space. Their Xe-100 reactor, designed as an 80-megawatt unit deployed in four-reactor clusters, has attracted $700 million in recent funding. The company has agreements with Energy Northwest in Washington state and Dow Inc. in Texas.

Google Partners with Kairos

Kairos Power signed a contract with Google to deploy multiple reactors targeting 500 megawatts of power, with the first unit expected online in 2030. The company uses molten fluoride salt cooling technology and is building a demonstration reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Google partnership enables Kairos to plan infrastructure for multiple project deployments.

States Join the Nuclear Race

Twenty-five states passed pro-nuclear legislation last year, with over 200 additional bills introduced in 2025. Tennessee committed $90 million to nuclear development, while Utah earmarked $20 million for site preparation. Texas, Michigan, Indiana, and Arizona are all crafting incentives to attract nuclear projects.

What This Could Mean for Investors

As tech giants drive unprecedented demand for clean, reliable power, the advanced nuclear sector represents a potential watershed moment in energy investment. With multiple billion-dollar deals already closed and more expected, early positioning in this transformative industry could be crucial. The convergence of big tech, energy innovation, and government support suggests significant growth potential in this emerging market.
